Charging System Upgrade Kits – 1/0 AWG, 2 AWG, 4 AWG
When upgrading your alternator to a unit capable of higher output, it is also necessary to upgrade your vehicle’s wiring. Specifically, it is necessary to upgrade:
- The charge lead from the alternator output stud to the battery
- The return path between the alternator and vehicle ground
- The return path between the battery negative (-) and the vehicle ground
It’s safe to assume that one of the reasons you are upgrading to a high-output alternator is because you’ve added some current hungry accessories and their requirements are greater than what the stock alternator was able to support. This is not the place to save a few bucks and skimp on cables!
We use the very best cable we can get our hands on, all of which meets full AWG specification, is Pure OFC Copper, and tinned for corrosion resistance. Specifically, our cable has the following strand count:

The fine strand construction and soft jacket offer excellent flexibility – far superior to standard battery cable! We custom make each cable in house and building the best cable requires the best parts. All eyelets used in the construction of our cables are the heaviest duty in the industry. They have up to twice as much copper weight as standard copper lugs, longer barrels which permit better crimping, and are tin plated to resist corrosion. These are simply the best quality eyelets we can find and they are ideal for high current applications! All eyelets are installed via our crimping press and insulated with the thickest adhesive lined heat shrink available. This super thick adhesive lined heat shrink tubing prevents battery acid or oxidation from entering the connection itself.
Most “upgrade kits” are nothing more than a larger gauge charge lead. Not ours – our kits include every single thing you need to do this job the correct way the first time around. How do we know? Because we’re tired of chasing these parts down too so we've included them in the kit! They are the only such kits available at any price and we can assure you that you won’t find a better quality kit.
We offer kits in 4 AWG, 2 AWG, and 1/0 AWG. Following are the alternator output capabilities of each kit:
We offer kits for both top mount and side mount batteries and all are available in 3 different lengths for different vehicle applications. We include a pair of SUPER HEAVY DUTY battery clamps in each kit. These clamps are designed to easily accommodate multiple large gauge cables, making the installation of the kit a snap. |

Fuse the Charge Lead
Most OEM charge leads have a fusible link on them. Its purpose is to protect on-board electronics in the event that the regulator fails and causes "voltage run-away." Although this is quite uncommon, fusing the charge lead included in any of our kits provides the same protection for your larger than stock alternator.
We recommend either our FHANL1 or FHANL2 ANL fuse holders for such applications and we stock ANL fuses in sizes up to 500 Amps.
Upgrade the Battery Clamps
What if you need to connect more than two really large gauge cables to the battery? No problem. Our
XB-BTU clamps have three cable locations - each accommodating 1/0 AWG, 2 AWG, 4 AWG, or 8 AWG. Sure, you can also fit multiple 4 AWG or multiple 8 AWG cables in a single location. For an additional $15.00, you can upgrade the standard clamps to these if you require such flexibility.
